St Kizito Kyakajanku Primary School – 2024

Founded by the community and housed in temporary mud and wattle classrooms as there are no other schools in the whole Kibalinga B Parish The school consists of 7 primary classes and 2 nursery classes (baby and top) with a total of 510 pupils.

The school is well run by Mr Erisa Waswa, a qualified headteacher, and 7 further (non-qualified) teachers plus a cook. All the pupils who sat for the PLE leaving exam passed with good grades.

According to new government rules each Parish has to have a government aided school, so in principle this school could be adopted by the government, but the condition of the school premises is currently preventing this. Becoming government aided would take an enormous burden off the shoulders of these poor subsistence farmers who currently have to pay for everything, buildings, teachers, books etc. The school needs to have at least 4 permanent classrooms before this can happen.

The parents had started constructing the first block of 2 classes, but were struggling to complete it, let alone build the second block. All children are receiving porridge. Maize, beans and bananas are grown around the school. There is no water at the school; this has to be carried from a shallow well at least a kilometre away. Classes take turns in doing this job. The parents at this school are also members of a microcredit group. We have given the school materials for the unfinished 2-classroom block, a 10,000 litre water tank and a fuel saving stove.

We hope that we can help this school with 2 more classrooms and a water tank in the future.

The philosophy of the programme is a hand-up, not a hand-out

The programme will gradually improve the quality and yield of milk goats throughout the region
